Your Ultimate Guide to Door County Cherries & Cherry Picking in 2026

Home > General > Your Ultimate Guide to Door County Cherries & Cherry Picking in 2026

Few things say summer in Door County quite like a bucket of fresh-picked cherries. This guide covers everything you need to plan your trip around cherry season in 2026 — when the fruit is ready, the best orchards near Fish Creek, where to taste, buy, and bake with cherries, and the festivals that celebrate the peninsula's most famous crop. And we'd be honored if you made Julie's Park Cafe & Motel your home base for all of it.

When Is Cherry Season in Door County?

Door County's cool spring air, lake-tempered climate, and unique soil make the peninsula one of the great cherry-growing regions in the country — in fact, it's the fourth-largest tart cherry producer in the United States. There are really two cherry seasons worth planning around: blossom season in spring and pick-your-own season in mid-summer.

Cherry Blossom Season (Mid-to-Late May)

Each spring, more than 2,500 acres of orchards burst into clouds of white and pink blossoms. Peak bloom typically lands in mid-to-late May and lasts only a week or two, depending on the weather. The best way to take it in is a slow, scenic drive: Highways 42 and 57 are lined with orchards, and many farms open their markets and tasting rooms during the bloom. If you're visiting in May, this is a quiet, beautiful (and free) way to experience the cherries before the busy summer season arrives.

Cherry Picking Season (Mid-July to Mid-August)

The main event — pick-your-own season — generally runs from mid-July through mid-August. Sweet cherries ripen first, usually in early-to-mid July, followed by the tart Montmorency cherries that Door County is famous for from mid-July onward. Orchards in the northern part of the county often run a little later, into the first or second week of August. Because the exact timing shifts with the weather every year, always call ahead to confirm picking conditions before you head out.

Sweet vs. Tart: Know Before You Go

  • Sweet cherries: great for eating fresh out of hand. They ripen first (early-to-mid July) and have a shorter window — heavy rain in late June or early July can speed things up.
  • Tart (Montmorency) cherries: the classic Door County pie cherry and the signature local crop. These ripen from mid-July into mid-August.
