We are so happy to be open for the season! We are on day 2 and have seen so many of our wonderful customers that we missed all winter. We know many more are coming to see us this season and we look forward to it! Join us by dining in our Fish Creek cafe or staying in our motel!
Our first customer of the season was Bob from Red Putter!

Our staff worked hard all week to get the restaurant ready and the food prepped for Friday. One of the fun tasks that the kitchen had was to bring out the big purple chair. Of course they couldn't resist a photo op on the chair.
These guys are the ones that make the magic happen in the back of the house where you can't see them. They work very hard and do a great job!

Living in Door County, we know how great it is. While not everyone would agree, I personally love not having fast food and lots of chains in Northern Door County. I'm not saying I don't shop at chains or go to fast food restaurants. I just like them being 45 minutes away from where I live. Door County is so beautiful and has so much to offer kids and adults. Recently Fodor's names Door County as one of the best small towns to live. I wholeheartedly agree. Here is the link to the article below:

Someone recently shared this video on youtube with aerial shots of Door County. Its a great way to see the area

While we are not open during the winter, I still like to share different things that you can do in the winter in Door County. One great thing in winter and summer is going to Peninsula State Park. There are so many things to do there.Yesterday Shane and I went cross country skiing in the park. The trails were so beautiful that I thought I would share some photos and tell you about the skiing.

I'm inside one my computer now writing this but Shane is actually out grooming the trails as I write. This is his first time grooming the trails. We had a lot of snow yesterday so they needed to be groomed again.
So back to skiing itself. There are two areas to park for cross country skiing. Where we usually park is Lot 5. You access this lot from a different entrance than you most likely have gone into the park before. The road is closer to the Ephraim entrance to the park...

People love to collect souvenires from their trips when they travel. Sometimes you get home and wonder what you are going to do with them. I was searching on Pinterest and found some great ideas of things you can do with the keepsakes you collect on trips.
Take that Door County T-shirt that you don't wear and turn it into a cute pillow! (Click on the photo to get directions on how to make it)

Make a collage of Door County and frame it! Take those tickets from American Folklore Theatre, Peninsula Players Theatre, and Door County Auditorium and add photos of your family at Nicolet Beach, in the BIG purple chair and much more. Use your imagination!

Winter is upon us in Door County. We have snow covering the ground and the temperature is COLD. Even though we are not open during the winter, we invite you to come and see what Door County has to offer. The hussle and bussle is done and pease is upon us. Its a different type of vacation spot in the winter. Weekends are the best time to come because then there are the most things open. During winter you can enjoy Door County's slow pace and quiet times.

"What do you do in the winter?"
Locals are not surprised to be asked this question a couple hundred times each Fall. When guests realize you close for the winter, the natural question comes. It always makes me chuckle when some people think that the whole county shuts down. I have had people ask if they even plow the roads up here. I think there is this idea that we get tons and tons of snow. Truth be told, we don't get that much, especially not this past winter. The lake on both sides makes things milder for us.
(Photo by Allen Cummings via Door County's Facebook page)
It's not an easy answer and everyone's response is different. The answer isn't simple. We do a lot of things. It's true that some migrate south for a warmer winter, but most locals remain up here in the winter because this is home. Many workers in Door County work 60+ hours a week for 6 months so they...

Door County is famous for wineries. There are many different types of which many give free samples when you visit. Wineries are great because they are all open year round. There are many choices of wine with plenty of unique choices. Each winery has something unique to offer. Many of the wineries also have tours so you can learn about the process.
Start your trip by stopping at von Stiehl Winery in Algoma on your way up the peninsula ( www.vonstiehl.com). Continue on to Sturgeon Bay and make a trip to Red Oak Vineyard ( www.redoakvinyard.com). Next stop is Door Peninsula Winery in Carlesville ( www.dcwine.com). While there, check out our Door Peninsula Riesling that we added to the menu a few years ago. It has been a hit with our guests!

Next, travel...

Door County is full of little hidden spots that each have their own unique character. Many of them are on the main highways but there are also a lot tucked away on the side roads. People don't like to talk about them too much for fear of flocks of people going to "their" spot.
While this new place was a secret to me until last year (this given that I've been up here for 12 years), many people do know about it. I am talking about the Ridges Beach in Bailey's Harbor. Bailey's Harbor has two beach areas: their main public beach and the Ridges Beach (that I know of). To get to the beach, you turn at the Ridge's (where Sandpiper used to be) in Bailey's Harbor on Hwy 57.
So, you may be wondering, "What is the big deal with this place?" Well, there are a few answers for that. First, the beach is dog friendly. It's only 1 of 2 beaches I know of in Northern Door County where I can bring my dog.

Second, the water is shallow...

Winter is very different in Door County than summer. One of the obvious differences to us is that Julie's Park Cafe and Motel is closed. This means that winter is a time to relax and reflect. While we relax and reflect on the previous year, we are also planning for the next. We also take time to enjoy what Door County has to offer in the winter. Soon the trails in Peninsula State Park will be full of snow and open. There you can cross country ski, snow shoe, and explore. Also, many of the shops are still open during the winter. Door County trolley tours continue. A great place to stay is the Open Hearth Lodge. One of our favorite places to eat during the winter is Sister Bay Bowl. We love to go other...

The wind storm on September 29, 2011 did a lot of damage to trees and property across Door County. We were very fortunate that our power was only out for a day and no trees damaged our building. Unfortunately, our Black Locust trees out front were not so lucky. A big branch from one of the trees fell across our road. The wind storm also cracked both of them. We then saw rot in one of them. We were very sad but we had to cut down the beautiful Black Locust trees in front of the restaurant this fall. We had a few professionals look at them and they said the trees could fall at any point on a windy day. I added a photo which shows the rot in the one of the trees. So sadly we had to take them out. We are working on plans for what we are going to do to replace them. We are trying to decide on a type of tree to plant or if we should add flower beds. We have also thought of putting a nice flag pole. Feel free to share any ideas!
